Petrel was a small launch owned by Charles Jeanneret. She operated on the Lane Cove River where her small draft helped in navigation of the shallow waters.

Twice in her career she received new engines, the first time in 1890 and  again in 1898. In 1898 she was sold to the Harbour Lighterage and Towing company after which she disappears from the records.
